NINE

Going Home

We left Las Vegas very abruptly, and I believe we were on the run for the crimes the women had committed. Half of the group was now in some other location, and, again, we split into two groups to prevent all of us from being apprehended at the same time. Om, Omson, Freedom, Lovelight, and I were now one traveling team. We settled into our new location, and I was just as oblivious to the plan as I had ever been.

Although I was purposely kept in the dark about the day-to-day operations and overall plans, I was now old enough to glean bits and pieces of information that gave me a broader understanding of my predicament. We had not made any incense while in Las Vegas, so the plan was to start up the incense selling business again, this time in Los Angeles.

Om sent Inspiration to connect with her contact at the Krishna Temple. But buying the incense sticks and oils from the Hare Krishnas was taking longer to negotiate than he had anticipated. The person who had been their contact was no longer a Krishna temple member, so Inspiration was trying to renegotiate, and they were having problems.

Om blamed Inspiration for the breakdown, which led to one of their violent fights.

He decided that we would sell scented candles with pictures of Guadalupe and other Catholic saints on them. I was now about 11 years old, and I could go out on my own and sell.

My quota was 15 candles a day, which sometimes required two trips home during the day. I began to learn my way around the area within about a 3-mile radius of our house. All the liquor stores, laundromats, strip malls, and restaurants were open for me to sell to. I made friends with a lot of merchants who recognized that I was not in school and that I was a hard worker. I met lots of kids at an arcade in our neighborhood and slowly assimilated into the culture of south central Los Angeles.

Om was happy with me during this time because I was doing very well selling. The rules were always changing. Very strict rules about talking, eating, sleeping, working, and meditating would change suddenly. Om still spoke in riddles that needed deciphering, and it was never easy navigating through the minefield of His psychological trickery.

He would leave the front door wide open, something that went against every one of His security measures. The police, FBI, and all other government agencies were our enemies. I had spent countless hours listening and learning how to prevent security breaches like this one, and yet, He, the “Lord” of all, was putting everyone at risk.

This must be a test, I thought. If I closed it in an attempt to secure the perimeter, I could be punished for assuming I had the authority to make that decision. If I left it open, that may also have led to some kind of punishment for it implied carelessness to a security breach.
